WOULD YOU CO-SIGN FOR LOVE?
August 14, 2025
So, I was scrolling through Reddit a few nights ago and ran across a post that shocked my sensibilities.
Title: Girlfriend Wants Me to Co-Sign a Car Loan
Should I co-sign a loan? A 34-year-old man shared that his 32-year-old girlfriend recently asked him to co-sign a $20,000 loan for a used car. Their relationship history is rocky, with multiple breakups over the past two years. Both lost their jobs during an industry downturn (his girlfriend lost her car during this time), but have since found new employment. After a couple weeks of getting back together she is pressuring him to co-sign for a used car. He refused, now she’s upset, and he’s wondering if he made the wrong call.
My Take:
Is there an eloquent way to say Hell No? Not on your life, my dear. I should think not! Or maybe perish the thought. If the bank refused to give her a car loan it’s because her payment history is too risky. And did she lose her other car because it was repossessed during her job loss? Co-signing a loan means that if she can’t make the payments, you’re legally responsible. This can destroy your credit, finances and peace of mind. Helping someone doesn’t always mean taking on their financial liabilities. He can support her by helping budget for a down payment and giving her rides to and from work if their schedules align while she is saving for another car. Researching for a lower cost vehicle or even lending her his car if she needs to run errands.
Just my opinion, love doesn’t mean destroying your own financial stability and peace of mind. And if this rocky relationship doesn’t work and he co-signed for her car. Then not only are you dealing with heartbreak and the disappointment of a failed relationship, but now his credit is shattered. This affects his ability to buy a house, purchase another vehicle, and these days depending on the industry he might even have his credit checked for job opportunities. I personally would rather take the heartbreak and lose a few nights of sleep than deal with years of credit trauma to repair.
