Why Bland Cooking Leads to More Takeout

If you find yourself reaching for food delivery apps simply because you don’t enjoy your own cooking, you’re not alone. Bland, boring, flavorless meals are one of the biggest reasons people order takeout more often than they want. One easy way to change that is by adding a few simple, budget-friendly ingredients that boost flavor without extra effort.

Simple Ingredients That Add Flavor Fast

Spaghetti and meat sauce is a perfect example. It’s a common, affordable meal, but it can easily taste flat if it’s only seasoned with salt, black pepper and jarred sauce. To make it more flavorful, I started layering in fresh basil, thyme, and oregano. Along with fresh garlic, salt, black pepper, and garlic salt, I added a pinch of adobo seasoning, a whole onion, and a bell pepper for depth.

When I want the sauce to lean more savory, I usually use a green bell pepper. For this version, I went with a red bell pepper to add a slightly sweet, tangy note (and honestly, it was what I had on hand). These small additions made a noticeable difference, turning a basic spaghetti and meat sauce into something more satisfying. Best of all, the entire meal came together in about 35 minutes, making it a quick, flavorful option that helps cut down on ordering takeout.

Other Ways to Upgrade Everyday Spaghetti and Meat Sauce

For anyone who doesn’t regularly buy fresh herbs, dried herbs are an easy and affordable way to add flavor. The Simple Truth Organic Italian Seasoning Blend and McCormick Gourmet Organic Basil shown below are pantry staples that work well for everyday spaghetti and meat sauce. They’re inexpensive, last a long time, and make a noticeable difference in flavor without extra effort. I’ve linked both below for convenience.
